There is a better solution to removing unwanted hair!

Understanding Your Options

You may be surprised to learn that almost your entire body is covered in hair, much of  it too fine to be visible to the naked eye.

Darker hair in unwanted areas can be embarrassing, even damaging to our self-esteem.  Common areas for male hair removal are the back, shoulders, chest and ears.  The most requested treatment areas for women are the face, bikini area, legs and underarms.

At home hair removal (including waxing, shaving, tweezing & chemical depilatories) is painful, messy, expensive and NONE are permanent.

For PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL, electrolysis and laser are the MOST effective methods.

Electrolysis

During electrolysis, an electric current  passes through a needle to destroy the individual hair root.  This method is best for small areas or highly pigmented skin.  Electrolysis is the preferred hair removal for blonde and gray hairs which do not respond well to laser treatment.

LightSheer Laser

The Lightsheer diode laser produces a beam of concentrated light which is absorbed by the pigment in your hair follicles.  The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to heat up the hair and impede the follicle’s ability to re-grow.  Laser hair removal is excellent for large areas as it treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously.

The LightSheer laser features a contact cooling handpiece which allows treatment on the most sensitive skin. The combination of aggressive skin cooling and concentrated laser pulses allow safe and effective treatment of all skin colors.

What to Expect

Before:
The length of your treatment may last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated.  It is important to understand that the hairs in an active growth phase (called anagen) are most affected by treatment. Since all hairs are not in this phase at the same time, more than one treatment is necessary to achieve the best results.

During:  Treatment may cause minor discomfort.  For sensitive areas, topical anesthesia (numbing cream or ointment) can be applied beforehand to maximize your comfort level.

After:  The appearance of your skin immediately after treatment will vary depending on the extent of the procedure and your skin type.  Side-effects may include some redness and swelling, but these results are positive as they indicate that the follicle is responding to the treatment.  Most redness disappears shortly afterwards with the application of ice, creams and/or aloe.

Choosing the Best Laser

Choosing the right laser is almost as important as choosing the right practitioner.  There are four commonly used types of Lasers:  IPL, “Yag,” Alexandrite and Diode.

1. IPL, or intense pulsed light system is actually an alternative to lasers, but is often mistaken for laser hair removal.  These systems are effective in experienced hands, but have a far greater risk of side effects such as burning of the skin and hyper/hypo-pigmentation (light or dark spots on the skin.)

2.  “Yag” lasers have come a long way since the original “Nd: Yag” which provided only temporary results.  The newer Yag lasers have longer pulses and are thought to be much more effective in long-term hair removal.

3.  Alexandrite lasers work best for patients with dark hair and fair skin, and are not recommended for darker-skinned patients due to the risk of skin burning and pigmentary changes.  Alexandrite lasers often require a higher number of visits to achieve the desired hair reduction.

4.    Diode lasers have achieved the most widespread use for laser hair removal due to the ability to safely treat darker skinned patients.  As well, the Diode laser has an extended pulse duration, which lessens the risks of skin damage.  Diode lasers reach more deeply into the follicle than other lasers to more effectively target the hair follicle.

Choosing your Practioner

The state of Florida recognizes several types of hair removal practitioners: Licensed Electrologist (LE,) Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE) and Certified Medical Electrologist (CME.)  Licensed Electrologists have had the required training to practice Electrology.  Certified Professional Electrologists have advanced to pass the national examination and are so designated by the American Electrology Association.  A Certified Medical Electrologist has had training and certification in laser and light based technologies, and is the only practitioner allowed to perform laser hair removal in the State of Florida except for a Medical Doctor (MD or DO)  Physician’s Assistant (PA,) or an Advanced Registered Nurse Practioner (ARNP) may perform laser hair removal in an office with a Supervising Physician and protocol.  Always ask who will be operating the laser when you call for your consultation, and don’t be afraid to ask how many years experience he or she has removing hair!
